- Abstract
- Investigations of the Sea of Okhotsk began in the 17 th century with journeys by Russian cossacks and explorers who visited its southern and eastern shores. Expeditions in the 18 th century discovered more than twenty of the Kurile Islands. As an emerging maritime power, the Russian Empire continued to organize naval explorations: the first and second Kamchatka expeditions led by V. I. Bering, the circumnavigation by I. F. Krusenstern and Yu. F. Lisiansky, and the expeditions by G. I. Nevelskoi, F. P. Litke, S. O. Makarov, and others. The most productive studies of the Sea of Okhotsk took place during the 20 th century with the establishment of regional and central specialized institutes for hydrographic and meteorological research, and they continue up to the present day.
