Abstract
The article analyzes the results of sociological studies of social and labor expectations of unemployed people in relation to self-employment (1995, 2002 and 2013), conducted in the monitoring mode using a single methodology in the Novosibirsk region. The author focuses on the opportunities and limitations of self-employment development, studies the dynamics of the socio-demographic potential of the unemployed population, their motivation and readiness for self-employment. It is concluded that it is necessary to give the development of self-employment the status of a national problem, which will allow influence two processes at once: develop entrepreneurship and fight unemployment.
