Abstract
During the Second World War, a special «Unit 731» of the Japanese Army located near Harbin, Manchuria, developed bacteriological weapons and conducted cruel experiments on prisoners. A group of servicemen from that Unit stood trial on accusation of war crimes in the eastern Soviet city of Khabarovsk in 1949. This paper discusses the history of the organization and conduct of the trial, as well as related ethical problems of medical experimentation on humans and social and psychological technologies used to suppress moral reservations and inhibitions of the personnel.
