Abstract
The research aimed to identify universal cognitive mechanisms of stereotyped judgments about therepresentatives of out-groups. Artificially constructed social groups were given as the objects of perceptionin order to eliminate the influence of subjects’ previously formed attitudes and emotionally colored “ready”stereotypes on their current perception. The hypothesis about the effects of cognitive styles and divergentthinking on the stereotyping the Other, which was operationalized through the description of his imagein terms of generalized features vs specific behavior, found empirical support. In a sample of 103 studentsa statistically significant effects of particular indicators of field-dependence, rigid control, impulsiveness, cognitive simplicity and low originality on stereotyping growth were established.
