Abstract

The author reveals the evolution of his theoretical and research positions over 50 years of research activity. Special attention is paid to changes in research approaches in the post-Soviet period. His research credo: following the principles of academic freedom to approach historical truth as much as possible relating a variety of different sides of American historical experience. Priority is given to such methodological approaches as civilization and interdisciplinary approaches, dialogue with a variety of historical schools. The attitude towards historical materialism is explained. The main research results are summed up. The involvement of the methods and categories of sociology combined with the approaches of professional historiography allowed the development of an innovative concept of social history and social conflict in American history. The use of categories of political science combined with the principle of historicism produced the original concept of the changing historical types of American democracy and political power in general. Author explored the main ideological currents of the United States: liberalism, conservatism, left and right radicalism, — and their correlation at all stages of American history. The author examined the leading schools of American historiography and revealed their contribution to the study of the main problems of the USA history. The original synthesis of domestic and foreign policy history of the United States has been carried out. The author 's concepts of the main problems of American history such as the US War of Independence and the Civil War, the Progressive era, the New Deal and others is revealed.
