Abstract

Brazil and the lusophone Africa countries as former Portuguese colonies for several centuries were linked by a common fate, which was inevitably reflected in fiction. In the works of the African writers, Brazil appears both as a "coast of suffering", where ships of slavers docked, and as a space of political utopia, where the principles of racial democracy were implemented. Many African writers note that Brazilian literature – in particular, modernists and regionalists - has proved to be a kind of aesthetic and ideological reference point for their work. In Brazil, the African component of culture, especially noticeable in the North-East of the country, has been the subject both of comprehension and historical reflection since the 30s of the XX-th century. In the new Millennium, Brazil's interest in Africa has acquired a special scale, which is reflected in the development of integration research projects in Literary studies, Anthropology and Cultural studies. In the article, the authors pay attention to a retrospective review of Luso-African literature’s reception in Brazil and come to the conclusion that studying the lusophone Africa literature, Brazil is looking for answers to questions related to the formation of its own national identity.
