Abstract

The Welfare State in Spain is a constituent part of the common EU space of the social integration, a Mediterranean version of the so-called European social model (ESM), also represented by Portugal, Italy and Greece. As a result of a long evolution it has reached the stage when it is possible to sum up, to evaluate achievements, to study problems, looking for the possible solutions. This is the subject of the monography of the famous economist, Roberto Velasco, published in 2019 in Madrid and attracted, like his previous works, the wide attention of the academic community in Spain. The book of the Spanish colleague gave rise to a group of researchers of the Institute of Latin America (Russian Academy of Sciences) to conduct an analysis of the situation of the Social State. The problems raised, which were sharply aggravated during the coronavirus pandemic, of which Spain was one of the main victims, underline the relevance of this topic.
